The world of childhood in the village: the heroes of Victor Astafiev’s stories come to life at the Chelyabinsk Youth Theater

--

Today and tomorrow, April 27, at 14:00 and 18:00, the Chelyabinsk Youth Theater hosts premiere performances of the play “Trees Grow for Everyone” based on the stories of the writer Viktor Astafiev (12+).

“Trees Grow for Everyone” is a story based on autobiographical stories from the collection “The Last Bow” by Viktor Astafiev, in which he relives the moments of his childhood, hungry and difficult, but happy and filled with the joy of discovery.

The play is staged by contemporary playwright Anna Lifirenko, and the stage director is Ivan Pachin. According to him, this story has many similarities with the childhood of him and artists of different generations – everyone is familiar with the village, with its atmosphere. Both teenagers and adults are welcome to attend the performance, as it creates space for dialogue between generations.

“We show the world through the eyes of a child – bright, colorful, full of discoveries. Every day for a child is a whole life full of adventures. The title of the play “Trees Grow for Everyone” may seem incomprehensible, but it reflects the main idea – kindness, love for nature and neighbor, which are available to everyone. We hope that after watching, parents will share stories from their childhood with their children, talk about their family and remember those who are dear to them,” said the director. Ivan Pachin.

The play presents two images of the main character: an adult and a little Vitya. An adult talks about his childhood. The little one is a typical hooligan, whose grandmother raised him. Despite all his pranks, she scolds him every time, but forgives the boy.

“In the play I play a boy. Of course, it’s not easy, because I’m a girl (editor’s note: smiles). But the director and I came to the conclusion that it is female nature, with its emotionality and openness, that will help me better convey the experiences of the little hero. To get used to the role, I recalled bright moments from my childhood, those first impressions and emotions that are remembered for a lifetime. Astafiev’s stories, although written more than half a century ago, still resonate in our hearts. Each of us had a childhood, there were grandparents who loved us and about whom we keep warm memories. Remembering my grandparents, our conversations and warm relationships, I was able to feel and convey the emotions of my character on stage,” noted the actress Ekaterina Yusupovawho plays little Vitya in the play.

It is noteworthy that the premiere of the play takes place before the writer’s anniversary – May 1 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Viktor Astafiev.

After the premiere, the performance can be seen on May 14, as well as on June 3, 4, 13 and 26 (12+).
