The Oryol Regional Court commuted the sentence of a teacher for the death of schoolchildren

The Oryol Regional Court commuted the sentence of a physical education teacher at the Nizhne-Zalegoshchensk school, who was found guilty of negligence due to the deaths of schoolchildren. This was reported by the press service of the court.

It is noted that during the consideration of the appeal, the father of the dead boys asked to change the punishment for the teacher from forced labor to a suspended sentence. The father of the schoolchildren said that the woman offered him and the whole family a sincere apology, and also “experienced the death of his children as her own great grief.”

In turn, the court, having examined the case materials and the verdict of the court of first instance, decided to commute the sentence in terms of reducing the period of forced labor. The sentence was changed from three years to two years and nine months.

Let us remind you that the tragedy occurred on June 18, 2023 in the village of Zatishye, Zalegoshchensky district. The next day, competitions in tourism and local history were to be held there. However, the teacher took the students to the competition site the day before. The children asked the teacher to allow them to go to the river. She gave permission and went with them, but at some point left them unattended. This time was enough for two schoolchildren to drown.

The teacher was tried under Article 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – negligence. The woman admitted her guilt and repented. In February, a district court sentenced her to three years of forced labor with 5% of her wages withheld to the state. In addition, the court banned her from teaching for two and a half years.
