The International Paralympic Committee European Open Swimming Championships are taking place in Portugal from 21 to 27 April.

More than 400 athletes took part in the competition.

On the fifth day of competition, Russian swimmers won 8 medals – 2 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze.

Victoria Ishiulova (50 meters freestyle, S8) and Ani Palyan (50 meters butterfly, S7) became European champions

The silver medalists of the European Championship were Valeria Shabalina (200 meters individual medley, SM14), Andrey Granichka (100 meters breaststroke, SB5), Natalya Butkova (50 meters freestyle, S4), Daria Lukyanenko (100 meters freestyle, S11).

Bronze medalists were Roman Zhdanov (50 meters freestyle, S4) and Zoya Shchurova (50 meters freestyle, S3)

Participation in the European Swimming Championships is a prerequisite for qualifying for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

The development of the sport is carried out by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). Swimming is one of the most medal-winning sports in the Paralympic Games. It involves men and women with musculoskeletal disorders, visual impairment and intellectual disabilities. At the Paralympic Games, athletes compete in a 50-meter pool on 8 lanes of the International Aquatics Federation (FINA) standard. At the XVI Paralympic Games, Russian swimmers won 17 gold, 14 silver and 18 bronze medals.
