At dusk, hedgehogs come out of hiding and go in search of food. They are primarily interested in worms and various insects. For people, such a meeting can be dangerous.

It’s the end of April, which means that Novosibirsk hedgehogs have awakened from hibernation, which lasted 6 months. The author of the telegram channel Bird on a Wire spoke about the meeting with the first two representatives of this species of mammals.

“Two southern hedgehogs (Erinaceus roumanicus) were met yesterday on Akademicheskaya Street. Ours differ from an ordinary hedgehog in having a darker muzzle,” wrote the nature lover.

After emerging from hibernation, hedgehogs especially need feeding. Hedgehogs can often be found near highways, where insects move in the dark.

Hedgehogs are not as harmless as they may seem. These animals hold the record for the number of ticks caught. In epidemiology there is even the concept of “hourly”. Therefore, petting hedgehogs is strictly not recommended. Just admire from afar, the author concluded.

Meanwhile, ticks have already bitten 85 residents of the Novosibirsk region. The most ferocious ticks live in the Iskitimsky and Maslyaninsky districts and in the city of Berdsk.
