In 2022, a case of tropical malaria was confirmed in a student who arrived in Oryol from Nigeria, the Office of Rospotrebnadzor for the Oryol Region reported.
– Malaria is a serious parasitic disease that is transmitted from a sick person to a healthy person through the bites of malaria mosquitoes, as well as through the placenta from mother to fetus. The disease is manifested by febrile attacks, anemia, enlargement of the liver and spleen, and sometimes damage to the kidneys and nervous system.
The incubation period ranges from 7 days to 1 month, but can reach three years. The disease begins acutely with symptoms of general intoxication (weakness, fatigue, severe headache, chills). Repeated attacks of fever occur, body temperature rises to 40 degrees and above, lasts for several hours and is accompanied by chills and severe sweating at the end of the attack.
There are 4 types of malaria: tropical, three-day, four-day and oval malaria. The heaviest is tropical. With late diagnosis and treatment, tropical malaria takes a malignant course and can lead to death, the regional department of Rospotrebnadzor said.
