Nanoparticles are used in a modern, gentle and highly effective method of treating precancerous and oncological diseases

A new method for producing nanoparticles for oncology therapy was developed at Novosibirsk State University. The patented technology makes it possible to obtain nanopowders of various types, which can be used in the treatment of a wide range of oncological diseases. This was reported by the press service of Novosibirsk State University.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the latest and highly effective method of treating precancerous and oncological diseases. Its principle is based on the use of special drugs (photosensitizers), which selectively accumulate in the cells of malignant tumors.

Then, under the influence of laser radiation, photosensitizers trigger photochemical reactions, releasing singlet oxygen and free radicals. This leads to the death and destruction of cancer cells without negatively affecting healthy tissues and organs.

Scientists at Novosibirsk State University have developed a unique technology for creating nanoparticles for PDT, which are pre-activated by ultraviolet radiation outside the body. These nanoparticles have a number of advantages over foreign-made analogues:

– Crystalline form with dimensions less than 20 nm ensures optimal penetration into tumor cells.

– Coating with polysaccharides improves particle uptake by cancer cells.

– The crystalline structure allows the particles to be used for the delivery of other drugs.

This new activation method expands the range of tumors that can be treated with PDT. Scientists are also working to create nanoparticles that can be activated by ultrasound and magnetic fields, which will further expand the possibilities of using the therapy.

The technology patented by NSU allows the production of nanoparticles inexpensively and on a large scale, which creates conditions for its widespread implementation in practical healthcare.

The next step will be to conduct the necessary tests of nanopowders, after which doctors will have at their disposal a line of innovative drugs for PDT that combine high efficiency and minimal negative effects on the patient’s body.

Previously, BFM-Novosibirsk wrote that Novosibirsk scientists had discovered an unknown family of proteins.
