China has closed its airspace to Boeing and Airbus aircraft of Russian air carriers registered in two jurisdictions, RBC reports citing two sources.

One of the interlocutors of the publication explained that in May, the Chinese aviation authorities asked all airlines to update electronic dossiers, which contain information, including information about aircraft, owners, etc. Russian carriers updated the information, but the authorities of the republic requested confirming data that imported aircraft of Russian carriers are officially deregistered abroad. The airlines could not provide such documents, so the Chinese aviation authorities refused to fly on such aircraft.

Another source clarifies that other countries also impose requirements for the “cleanliness” of aircraft in terms of registration. He cited the example of Turkey, which denies “double-registered” aircraft to fly into or through its airspace.

Since the beginning of the military operation on the territory of Ukraine, the EU countries and the United States have imposed a number of sanctions against the Russian aviation industry. Thus, Western countries closed their airspace to Russian aircraft. At the end of February, the European Union banned the sale of aircraft and spare parts to Russian airlines, and a ban was also introduced on insurance and maintenance of goods related to the aviation and space industries. In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law under which the government could allow the registration of rights to foreign aircraft leased from domestic companies.

On April 11, the European Union placed 21 Russian airlines on a list of companies subject to a flight ban or operating restrictions within the EU, allegedly due to aircraft failing to meet international safety standards.

The US has also imposed export sanctions on Russian airlines Aeroflot, Rossiya, Azur Air and Utair for violating export controls imposed in response to the military operation in Ukraine. All three airlines are prohibited from exporting and re-exporting US-made components, including through intermediaries in third countries. The restrictions are valid for 180 days, it can be extended.
