Moscow. April 24. INTERFAX.RU – The Basmanny Court of Moscow, at the request of the investigation, arrested Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Timur Ivanov for two months, the press service of the court told Interfax. He will remain in jail until June 23.
Another person involved in the case, an acquaintance of Deputy Minister Sergei Borodin, was placed in custody for the same period of time.
Both, according to the court, were charged with receiving a bribe on an especially large scale (Part 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code).
According to investigators, Ivanov and Borodin “entered into a criminal conspiracy with third parties, teamed up with them in advance to commit a crime by an organized group – receiving on an especially large scale in the form of providing services of a property nature during contracting and subcontracting work for the needs of the Ministry of Defense,” they reported in a court.
Deputy Minister Ivanov does not admit guilt in accepting a bribe, a source familiar with the situation later told Interfax: “Ivanov categorically denies his involvement in the crime charged against him and insists on his innocence.” According to Ivanov and his defenders, the actions of the deputy minister were of a civil nature.
Ivanov’s arrest became known on the evening of April 23. He was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense in May 2016. At the Ministry of Defense, he oversaw the construction and overhaul of departmental facilities, and was responsible for organizing property management, troop quartering, housing and medical support for the Armed Forces.
Before coming to the post of deputy minister, Ivanov headed JSC Oboronstroy for several years.
Part 6 art. 290 of the Criminal Code provides for punishment for extortion of a bribe for committing actions (inaction) in favor of the bribe giver, for illegal actions (inaction), by a group of persons by prior conspiracy and on an especially large scale. The maximum term of imprisonment is 15 years, and a fine of up to seventy times the amount of the bribe is also provided.
