It is noted that the missile was likely aimed at the American-flagged container ship Yorktown, which is carrying 18 US citizens and four Greek citizens.

The report said four unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were later shot down “in the air over Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.”

“The UAVs were determined to pose an immediate threat to U.S., coalition, and merchant shipping in the region. These actions are being taken to protect freedom of navigation and enhance the security of international waters for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels,” the command stressed.

At the same time, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saria said that “several anti-ship missiles were fired at the container ship Yorktown, and direct hits were recorded on the target.”

Sari also reported two operations using UAVs. The first target was a US warship in the Gulf of Aden, and the second was an Israeli ship in the Pacific Ocean, the drones “achieved their goals.”

Following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who currently control large parts of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, as well as some northern and western territories of the country near Saudi Arabia, began shelling ships in the Red Sea. In response, the US and UK regularly carry out strikes on Houthi assets and installations in Yemen.
