Scientists from Monash University analyzed the effect of fiber on hypertension, determining the measurable amount of dietary fiber that women and men need to consume to lower blood pressure (BP), Sports.kz reports with reference to the “Championship”.

The study was published in the journal Hypertension.

Dietary fiber has proven to be a critical but underappreciated part of hypertension treatment. Our study highlights the evidence supporting the effectiveness of dietary fiber in lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

A meta-analysis found that higher dietary fiber intake was associated with significant reductions in BP independent of medications to control hypertension. For women with hypertension, the recommended dietary fiber intake should be more than 28 g per day; for men, this figure should be more than 38 g per day. The authors estimated that each additional 5 g per day reduced systolic blood pressure (top number) by 2.8 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure (bottom number) by 2.1 mm Hg.

Researchers note that the benefits of dietary fiber include its positive effect on the gut microbiome. Fiber allows bacteria to produce short-chain fatty acids with anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory functions that help lower blood pressure.
