The White House commented on Russia’s veto of the UN Security Council resolution on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons in space.

This is stated in a statement released by the White House press service from US Presidential National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, European Pravda reports.

Sullivan recalled that the proposed resolution would have called on all Member States not to develop nuclear weapons specifically designed for launch into space orbit.

“The launch of nuclear weapons into orbit by a State Party would not only violate the Outer Space Treaty, but would also jeopardize the vital communications, scientific, meteorological, agricultural, commercial and national security services that all satellites provide to communities around the world,” the statement says.

Sullivan recalled that the United States has information that Russia is developing a satellite capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

“We heard President Putin publicly state that Russia does not intend to place nuclear weapons in space. If this were so, Russia would not have vetoed this resolution,” he concluded.

Let us remind you that Russia vetoed on the draft UN Security Council resolution against the proliferation of weapons, including nuclear weapons, in outer space.

Recall that the United States privately warned Russia from the deployment of new nuclear weapons in space, capable of disabling a large number of satellites.

Officially, the United States informed Congress and allies in Europe about new intelligence datarelated to Russian nuclear potential, which may pose an international threat. Sources later reported that the warning concerned Russian potential in space and satellites.
