The Islamic Revolutionary Court in Iran sentenced famous rapper Toumaj Salehi to death on charges related to anti-government protests in the country in 2022-2023. The artist’s lawyer reported this to the Iranian newspaper Sharq.

Salehi’s songs supported months of protests in Iran in 2022, sparked by the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested on suspicion of wearing an inappropriate hijab.

Salehi was arrested in October 2022 after making public statements in support of nationwide protests. He was sentenced to six years and three months in prison in 2023, but escaped the death sentence thanks to a Supreme Court ruling.

The Iranian judicial system has not yet confirmed the verdict. Salehi has 20 days to appeal the decision.
