Last year, Roman Kostomarov was hospitalized with a high fever and cough. A common cold quickly developed into pneumonia, which seriously worsened overall health. The Olympic champion was urgently transferred to intensive care. where he was connected to a ventilator and ECMO. However, doctors were unable to stop the inflammation in a timely manner. He began to develop necrosis of the limbs, which subsequently led to the amputation of both legs, fingers on one hand and hand on the other hand.

Fans, friends and colleagues, including Tatyana Tarasova, were worried about the skater. She said that they regularly called the chief doctor of the hospital where Roman was staying. “There was no hope. It is wrong to look for those to blame, especially among doctors. There was no other way to do it. We all rode in the bitter cold with a cold and didn’t even pay attention to it. Oksanka (Domnina. – Note ed.) is, of course, a grandiose woman. Roman chose the right person in life,” the coach shared.

Tarasova added that she recently called Alexey Yagudin on a personal issue, and he said that Kostomarov was sitting next to him. As it turned out, the skater is already successfully touring Russian cities. “This is the character of an Olympic champion. It is clear that life will not be easy,” Tatyana Anatolyevna summed up in an interview with Nadezhda Strelets.

Let us remind you that earlier the skater performed at the anniversary of Ilya Averbukh. Roman took to the ice together with Tatyana Navka, repeating the famous dance from the Turin Olympics. The athlete published a video of himself skating and stated that he was not going to stop there and would continue to train. Kostomarov admitted that he is still dissatisfied with himself. “The ice was slippery, not like before. True, I myself could not get out right away; Maxim Stavisky, Ilya Averbukh and other guys helped me. I didn’t understand, somewhere there was a feeling that was there before, but now you are deprived of your main parts – feet and legs. And then you go out and there are some two logs under you,” explained the Olympic champion.

Kostomarov added that he received tremendous support from the audience. “I cried. It hurt because you can’t do the things you used to do. Of course, you understand how to do everything, but your legs no longer obey you,” Roman explained. According to the skater, he felt like an amateur beginner. As an example, the athlete cited the participants of the Ice Age. “Now I can be taken as the star of the project,” the Olympic champion noted and clarified that he would pair up with Tatyana Navka.

At the same time, Roman noticed that he had managed to get used to the prostheses. According to the athlete, he can no longer imagine how he used to move without them. “When you are on your feet, you feel like a complete person. When you come home and unfasten everything, you realize that you are like a cockroach on your back that cannot turn over. And you feel that way in the morning too. Then, when you put everything on, you drive a car, you feel normal, you live,” Kostomarov shared. In addition, the skater installed a bionic hand, with which he learned to write and draw, as well as control a car.
