This is not the first death of major officials and businessmen in Russia in recent times.

  • In January, 60-year-old Leonid Shulman was found dead, and in February, 61-year-old Alexander Tyulyakov. Both held high positions in the structure of Gazprom and allegedly committed suicide, leaving suicide notes.
  • In April, the former vice-president of Gazprombank Vladislav Avaev, his daughter and wife were found dead in Moscow. According to investigators, Avaev first shot his family, and then shot himself. A few days later, the same incident occurred in Spain, where the former Novatek top Sergey Protosenya, his wife and daughter were found dead. The police also considered the version that Protosenya could have killed his woman and daughter, and then committed suicide.
  • In July, in the suburbs of St. Petersburg, Yuri Voronov, the head of the transport organization Astra Shipping, which was engaged in Arctic contracts for Gazprom, was found shot to death.
  • Recently, Lukoil vice-president Ravil Maganov died in Moscow. A 67-year-old top manager fell out of a hospital window according to media sources. Lukoil noted that Maganov died “after a serious illness.” This is at least the sixth death since the beginning of the year associated with the Russian oil and gas industry.
