May is traditionally a boring time in terms of new TV series releases. It seems that the showrunners realize that the coming summer encourages people to walk more, sit in cafes on the verandas in a friendly company, in short, enjoy life without screens.

Judging by myself, every day it becomes more and more difficult to sit at a desk. The gaze, against one’s will, rushes out the window where the sun is shining, and thoughts float towards trips into nature and spiritual communication over barbecue on the shore of the Gulf of Finland.

However, a compact May selection of TV series and films is perhaps even appropriate, as it will not be too distracting.

And, as always, I remind you that all the series and films listed in the material can be watched on RUTUBE. RUTUBE is the best Russian legal streaming service for watching Western films and TV series.

Table of Contents

“Dune: Part Two”

When: already

Usually it is recommended to go to the cinemas to see such films, because Denis Villeneuve in “Dune 2” unfolded in all its glory. There is a minimum of dialogue, but endless dizzying plans of the desert and gorgeous computer graphics. Although “Blade Runner 2049”, where there was no “action” on the screen for 10 minutes, the second “Dune”, of course, does not live up to it.

The film is already available for viewing online on Western streaming services in good 4K quality. So if you have a big and juicy TV, then you should definitely watch it. You probably don’t have to go to the cinemas, because, as I understand it, they show exactly the same file downloaded from the Internet.

The second Dune has already been dubbed a better film adaptation, and it is breaking box office records. But I don’t think it’s because of the plot. Namely due to views and graphics. I watched the film in its entirety, and then selectively re-watched sections. Of course, the most impressive scene included in the trailers is when the Fremen attack the imperial ship with giant sandworms. This is really something. Some kind of magical-fantasy realism.

But the plot, in my opinion, turned out to be somewhat crumpled. It will be ideal for those who have read books. But an unprepared viewer may be slightly puzzled, so be prepared to answer questions (why are worms afraid of water, what kind of Bene Gesserit, what kind of Sardaukars, why do they all have catheters in their noses, etc.).

And, by the way, I recommend rewatching Blade Runner 2049. In my opinion, this film is clearly underrated. It was difficult for people in the cinema to sit through 3 hours at a time. But now that the film has long been released in 4K Dolby Vision / HDR10+, you can watch it in a couple of steps, which is what I recently did. I had great pleasure.

“Fallout”

When: already

The series based on the Fallout gaming universe, released on Amazon Prime, was generally warmly received by both viewers and fans of the game. Of course, you can hear the cries of dissatisfaction, but it is impossible to please everyone. The popularity of the series is evidenced by the soaring sales of the game Fallout 4 and the growth of Fallout 76 online.

Fans of the game series will be pleased with the attention to detail, and the average viewer will fully enjoy the graphics, surroundings, and makeup of the actors. In my opinion, that same ghoul (living skeleton) looks like garbage. He really doesn’t have a nose!

It is obvious that the creators of the series are aiming for a large-scale story for several seasons. After all, the first season is mostly an introduction to the characters and a superficial acquaintance with the world around us. We were only briefly outlined the arc around the bunker, we were told little about the brotherhood, and we only know in fragments about the history of the world and the backstory of the characters.

So we’ll be looking forward to the second season.

I even slightly regretted that the series was released at once. In my opinion, the ideal option would be to release 2 episodes a week, because I didn’t have the will to stretch out the viewing for at least a couple of weeks. I watched all 8 episodes in 5 days.

“The Maiden and the Dragon” / Damsel

When: already

This movie starring Millie Bobby Brown (11 in Stranger Things) came out back in March. And since then I’ve been eyeing him suspiciously, expecting another narrative rom-com or something similar. But I couldn’t bear it and turned it on (the movie has been in the top Netflix views for a week now). It turned out to be quite good.

The plot is simple. There is a famine in the fairy-tale kingdom, and in order to improve the situation, the king decides to marry his princess daughter to the prince, who, however, does not intend to live happily ever after with his new wife, but is going to sacrifice her to the dragon.

At a certain moment, of course, the news comes out that, supposedly, only on the shoulders of innocent women and a hungry dragon does all this fairy-tale far-land rest. By the way, it’s a very shaky structure, don’t you think? But everything is within tolerable limits. Although, of course, Netflix should learn from the same Disney, which released an entire Star Wars series about the female character Ahsoka, and it turned out organically.

Otherwise, do not forget that the film “The Maiden and the Dragon” is presented as a fairy tale. Well, a fairy tale is just a fairy tale, in that a grimy princess can have an equal bite with a dragon, which undoubtedly reflects the negative energy of patriarchy.

“Dark Matter” / Dark Matter

When: May 8

It is likely that this is the main series of May, based on the book of the same name. I finished the book just the other day and I recommend it to you too. Perhaps I’ll share it in the selection of books of the month, if I have enough energy for this section.

The genre is a science fiction thriller. There is not much science there, but science fiction and thrillers are just right. What’s scientific here is that the book relies on an interpretation of quantum mechanics, which states that every possible outcome of every event creates a new universe or world, running parallel to our flow. Simply put, hello multiverses. But the topic is limitless and interesting.

The plot is quite simple to describe: physicist Jason Dessen from Chicago is kidnapped, and upon waking up, he realizes that he is in an alternative version of his life. To return back, he will have to go through a series of parallel realities and encounter an alternate version of himself.

What speaks in favor of the series is that Apple never spares money and always strives to make a quality product. The only downside to Dark Matter is that Apple focuses on human history rather than fiction. So, I still can’t forgive Apple for the series about an alien invasion, where they showed everything (from sheep to lesbian Japanese girls) except aliens. And I came to watch aliens, shootouts with laser guns, blood and Armageddon!

But in this case, the trailer seems to look very good.

“Atlas”

When: May 24

It seems that we have begun to forget about Jennifer Lopez. And she decided to remind herself with a new film. However, the desire to make money rather played a role here. Rumor has it that the singer is in crisis; fans are not receiving new albums. And Lopez even partially canceled and partially changed the poster for her world tour, which so far has failed miserably. Well, making a film for Netflix is always a surefire way to make money.

Lopez plays a data analyst (here they are, the heroes of the new time! No more engineers and oil drilling foremen, now films are made about programmers and big data analysts) of a misanthropic character, who also does not trust artificial intelligence. Lopez, who once insured her sirloin point for $1 million, joins the group to capture the robot deserter, whose secret she will be able to save humanity by revealing.

The film, by the way, has nothing to do with matter. Atlas is the name of Lopez’s character.

The film was directed by Brad Peyton, who is known for the films “San Andreas Fault”, “Rampage” (this is where the giant ape and Dwayne Johnson are). The director specializes in action films. None of his films became a hit, but the director is still given a lot of money because he knows how to construct a frame and beautiful plans. Well, the fact that you usually have no luck with the script is not his problem. Well, maybe I’ll be lucky this time. And we will be happy for Jennifer Lopez, who at 54 does not sit still.

In general, I included the film in the selection because, judging by the trailer, it has a solid budget. Here there is space, and robots are running around, and everything is exploding, and a world of the distant future has been drawn.

“Far Space” / Outer Range

When: 16th of May

To be honest, I missed this series, the first season of which was released back in 2022. This is a fantastic Western. In the story, the farm owner discovers on his lands a certain mysterious black void (literally a hole in the ground without a bottom, but the creators of the series say that this is precisely a “black void”), which has certain properties from which you can benefit (I write in equivocal terms, to avoid spoilers). As you might guess, fuss begins around a valuable and scarce resource.

I managed to watch the first couple of episodes. And I completely approve. The main character, played by Josh Brolin, is such a strong cowboy-businessman who loves horses, prays before eating and keeps a tight rein on the whole family. The cameraman gave beautiful views of nature and animals, and the graphics editors carefully painted a black void.

So if you missed it, you can watch the first season for now, and the continuation will be released on May 16.

Well, those who watched can share their impressions in the comments. Is it worth watching?

Conclusion

As always, I encourage you to share in the comments any good new or old movies or TV shows you’ve enjoyed lately.
