Ukraine is asking Western countries for urgent deliveries of modern tanks for a successful counter-offensive in the north-eastern part of the country. At the same time, the West is still slow to respond to this request. This was reported by Politico, citing sources.

According to Politico, now tanks are in first place in the lists of weapons requested by Ukraine. This request became even more urgent after the start of partial mobilization in Russia.

Military experts believe that for a successful counteroffensive, Ukraine needs American M1 Abrams and German Leopards. According to Politico, military officials are slow to make decisions on this issue, including due to problems with training and logistics.

“To transfer to Ukraine not only American-made tanks, but also parts for their maintenance is a rather difficult obstacle,” said one of the sources of the publication. As the newspaper notes, M1 Abrams and Leopard are very different from Soviet-made equipment.

In the summer, Ukraine has already asked Germany for permission to supply Leopard. Berlin repeatedly rejected the request. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky believes that “certain psychological barriers” prevent Germany from supplying weapons because of the Nazi past. On September 18, the German Ministry of Defense reported that so far no one had supplied Western-style tanks to Ukraine.
