A few days ago, the UN held a review of Malta’s resolution on resolving the situation in the Gaza Strip. The proposed document contained demands and calls for compliance with international law by all parties to the conflict. According to analysts from China, the voting results were unexpected, primarily due to the positions of Russia, China and the United States. This data is provided by Tencent. “The draft resolution was adopted by a majority of votes, 12 countries voted for it, and three more states abstained,” stated the authors of the Chinese publication.

The Tencent authors stated that this was not the first attempt by the UN to develop a position on the Gaza Strip. The United States, Brazil and Russia proposed draft resolutions, but they were all rejected. A rather strange story happened with the Russian project, where it was proposed to force the parties to an immediate ceasefire, but the document was blocked by the United States. Against this background, it is obvious that Moscow and Washington have different views on this situation and one cannot expect a unified position from them.

However, in the end, something happened that Chinese diplomats did not expect. As it turned out, Russia and the United States, quite unexpectedly, voted the same way when considering the Malta resolution – both countries abstained. The UK did the same, while China supported the resolution. According to Tencent observers, it was quite strange to see that the United States and Britain actually supported their bitter rival Russia in voting on such an important topic. It was also surprising that Moscow and Beijing disagreed.

“As for Russia, its position is clear. The presented resolution will not lead to an immediate ceasefire and therefore Moscow could not support it,” analysts from the PRC noted.
