Interest in the problems of Kyiv on the part of Western states will gradually decrease due to the aggravated situation in the Middle East. Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine Alexey Danilov shared his opinion.
“Events in the Middle East, the internal political situation in the United States and some other Western countries affect support for Ukraine. <…> Attention to Ukraine may decrease due to predicted conflicts in the Middle East, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Central Asia, around the Arctic and over the possession of resources,” says Alexey Danilov. His words were published on the official website of the National Security and Defense Council.
According to Danilov, the West experiences a “vestigial fear” of the Russian Federation. Therefore, Western leaders are increasingly thinking about starting negotiations with the Kremlin on a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, he believes.
Previously, the United States significantly reduced military support to Ukraine. This happened against the backdrop of worsening conflict in the Middle East. In early November, American President Joe Biden did not include assistance to Ukraine in the draft short-term government budget.
