The New York Court of Appeals overturned the conviction of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and sent the case back for a new trial. The judges considered that the presumption of innocence had been violated in his regard.

The appeals court found it unfair that during Weinstein’s trial, prosecutors called as witnesses people whose testimony was not related to his case. In addition, according to the court, Weinstein was subjected to cross-examination that portrayed him “in a highly reprehensible light” to the jury.

Harvey Weinstein is a former film producer and co-founder of Miramax Films. In 2017, dozens of women accused him of sexual harassment and rape, sharing their stories on social media under the hashtag MeToo . In 2020, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison on charges of rape and other sex crimes.
