The St. Petersburg City Court upheld the decision of the court of first instance, which fined the European University for participating in the activities of undesirable organizations. The press service of the university reports this.

The reason was 8 scientific books that the prosecutor’s office seized from the university during an inspection in May last year due to the fact that they were published with the support of organizations whose activities in Russia were recognized as undesirable.

In this case, in December 2023, the Dzerzhinsky District Court brought the university to administrative responsibility and fined it 35 thousand rubles. The university filed a complaint with the St. Petersburg City Court.

The university said that the books got into the library long before the adoption of the federal law on undesirable organizations, back in the period from 2000 to 2009. After the May inspection by the prosecutor’s office, the literature was kept in a closed fund and was not issued to readers.

The court did not accept the university’s arguments and considered that the educational institution actually took part in the activities of these organizations. Now the publications are threatened with destruction. At the same time, the contents of these books were not examined, and they were not evaluated. The university does not agree with the court’s decision and intends to appeal.

In 2016, Rosobrnadzor announced 120 violations at the European University. In March 2017, the university’s license to conduct educational activities was canceled for 1.5 years; it was returned in August 2018.
