In early April 2024, Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher announced their divorce after 13 years of marriage. Actress Rebel Wilson had a hand in this, having published a memoir a month earlier, in which she talked about some of her Hollywood colleagues and talked about the severity of life. In particular, the star of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” made serious accusations against Cohen, revealing details of their collaboration on the film “The Brothers from Grimsby.”
According to Rebel, Sasha indulged in indecent behavior, forced her to undress on set, despite Wilson’s rule never to be naked on camera, and then, threateningly, demanded that these scandalous details be cut out of the book. Insiders claim that this was the last straw and led to another star marriage to break up.
“Sacha Baron Cohen called through the production assistant and said I needed to shoot an extra scene. What followed was the worst experience of my professional life. An incident that left me feeling intimidated, humiliated and compromised. It cannot be published due to the peculiarities of English law,” writes Rebel Wilson.
According to her, every time she talked to Cohen, he mentioned that he would like her to “do a nude scene in a future scene.”
“I kept telling him no and he didn’t like it.”
One day she received an email saying that Baron Cohen wanted her to fly to London for “reshoots” of a “graphic sex scene.” She said she set up a meeting with Baron Cohen and the writers and director Louis Leterrier to express what she “would be comfortable and uncomfortable doing” in the scene.
“The attitude I felt from them was, ‘Rebel Wilson is causing a problem. I am the problem. Why don’t I do a graphic sex scene like it’s written, where my excess weight causes the bed to fall through the floor?” – Wilson states in the book. “In the end […] I agreed to film something to get the hell away from this inconvenient company.”
Recently, the first comments about what happened from representatives of Sacha Baron Cohen appeared. According to them, everything written by Rebel Wilson is a complete lie and slander. To confirm that he is right, the actor and his lawyers cite the fact that in some versions of the book, the “dirty” details of the relationship between Rebel and Sasha are obscured by the publisher. Cohen’s team believes that this is due to the fact that the facts were not verified and could seriously damage the reputation of all individuals involved in this scandal. Cohen also calls this a personal victory and intends to continue proceedings with his former co-star, the Daily Mail reports.
“HarperCollins did not review this section of the book before publication and took the sensible but terribly late step of removing Rebel Wilson’s defamatory statements. Printing false information is illegal in the UK, a legal principle that has existed for hundreds of years. “This is a clear victory for Sacha Baron Cohen, and it confirms what we have said from the very beginning – that this is an obvious lie,” the actor’s lawyers said.
After the edited book was finally released, publisher HarperCollins confirmed to the Daily Mail that details had been removed. Specifically, the corrections are contained in section 23 on pages 216, 217, 218 and 221. In addition, the books have an explanatory note at the beginning.
Surprisingly, the opinions of fans were divided, and some of them took the side of Sacha Baron Cohen. In their opinion, if a publisher dared to invest and edit a significant part of the books, this was an indicator that the arguments in favor of the actor were convincing. Moreover, the public is surprised by the actions of Rebel Wilson. They argue that the decision to frame the person who gave her the job in this way seems somewhat strange. The actress herself assures that her goal was not to “cancel” Cohen, much less the collapse of his relationship with his wife – she just wanted to share her experience.
