Chinese-backed Swedish electric vehicle (EV) maker Polestar Automotive is preparing to move production of vehicles it plans to supply to Europe to its US plant from China amid rising geopolitical tensions. Asked how Polestar is preparing for the European investigation into Chinese-made electric vehicles, which could lead to higher tariffs, CEO Thomas Ingenlath said the automaker is exploring the idea of exporting the South Carolina-made Polestar 3 to the European Union. Polestar makes most of its vehicles in China. The company began production this year in South Carolina and plans to build a plant in South Korea. “We’re really in limbo because we certainly don’t know where the investigation is going,” he said. “So Polestar is preparing as best as possible. The drive towards a global presence and production is something we have accelerated.” Polestar delivered 54,600 vehicles worldwide in 2024 and its next target is to deliver between 155,000 and 165,000 vehicles in 2025. The company reported a 40 percent drop in deliveries in the first quarter, but expects deliveries of its Polestar 3 and 4 models to increase this year. Ingenlath said the automaker is on track to cut sales by 40% in Europe, 30% in the US and 30% in the Asia-Pacific region.

Swedish electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Polestar Automotivea Chinese-backed company, is preparing to shift production of cars it plans to supply to Europe to its US plant from China due to rising geopolitical tensions.
Answering the question how Polestar is preparing for a European investigation into Chinese-made electric vehicles that could lead to higher tariffs, CEO Thomas Ingenlath said the automaker is exploring the idea of exporting Polestar 3produced in South Carolina, to the European Union.
Company Polestar manufactures most of its cars in China. The company began production in South Carolina this year and plans to build a plant in South Korea.
