Volvo faces new challenges in the European electric vehicle market. Due to the European Union imposing new tariffs on cars made in China, the Swedish car brand has made a strategic decision to move production of its popular EX30 electric car from China to Belgium. The move will allow the company to avoid higher tariffs and remain competitive in the market. With the start of autumn this year, all electric cars imported from China will be subject to new taxes, which could significantly affect the cost of Volvo’s products. The new EX30 quickly won over customers and became one of the brand’s best-selling models, despite the overall decline in demand for electric vehicles in Europe. Anticipating these changes, Volvo decided to stop production at its plant in Ghent, Belgium, for a week. During this time, more than 6,500 employees will be furloughed while the plant intensively installs a new production line for the EX30, which will begin production in 2025. “Electric models produced in Ghent achieved record sales in the first months of this year.” , says René Aerts, Head of Volvo Belgium and Luxembourg. The company aims to have half of its global sales come from electric vehicles by 2025. Moving production of the EX30 to Belgium will not only help Volvo avoid new tariffs, but will also underscore the brand’s commitment to an environmentally friendly and sustainable business model. The company has already stopped producing diesel cars and plans to completely phase out gasoline cars by 2030.
