The Educational Testing Service (ETS), which conducts the TOEFL international English exam, will allow citizens of Russia and Belarus to register to take it remotely from August 4. Earlier, when registering a resident of the Russian Federation, a message appeared on the exam website that the user’s data did not meet the requirements of ETS.

“Starting August 4, ETS is making changes to its March 2022 policy and will now allow test takers in Russia and Belarus to register for the TOEFL iBT Home Edition, TOEFL Essentials and GRE Home Edition unless they have any financial barriers to this,” ETS said in a statement.

It notes that due to the Russian military operation in Ukraine, it is still impossible to pass the TOEFL exam in the Russian Federation or Belarus. However, it will also be possible to take it in person at examination centers in other countries.

The TOEFL exams in Russia and Belarus were suspended in early March due to the start of a military operation in Ukraine. The international system for assessing English language proficiency IELTS has also canceled exams in Russia. Passing these exams is necessary for those who intend to enter foreign universities or find a job in English-speaking countries.
