Ordinary workers in the USSR paid no more than one ruble for lunch and certainly did not go hungry. The catering establishments had a rich selection of dishes, not only Soviet, but also foreign.
The diet of that time can be seen in many feature films. For example, plumber Afanasy Borshchov from Afonya preferred the original French treat. In one of the scenes, when he came to the dining room, he asked for solyanka and splint. The name, unusual for Russian ears, is a beef chop fried in a frying pan with butter, sometimes with the addition of breading.
Afonya ate even better than in an elite restaurant in France. After all, in addition to the rich soup and a juicy piece of meat, Leonid Kuravlev’s hero also received a hearty salad and, of course, a glass of that same legendary compote made from dried fruits.
