Rostov region, April 23, 2024. DON24.RU. Scientists from the Skolkovo Center and the Biolaboratory from the Arkhangelsk Region learned how to make bread with added protein from fly larvae. As it turned out during research, substances obtained from the processing of insect larvae increase immunity, can serve as a natural preservative and have disinfectant properties. Animals that were supplemented with a small amount of protein from larvae ate 10% less, grew faster and did not get sick. And bread, to which a little substance obtained from flies has been added, rises faster and lasts longer. Scientists are confident that the discovery will be of great benefit, the main thing is to overcome the psychological barrier. This was reported by the press service of the Skolkovo center.

“True, 99% of people are still mistaken in thinking that maggots are a replacement for fishmeal and other types of proteins. But this is an addition: the protein or fat of the black soldier fly is used in microdoses, and only in this case the desired result is achieved… Getting used to the idea that this is normal and even healthy should happen gradually. And when people feel the effect of this fly at the everyday level, they will notice that they are getting sick less often, they will be much calmer about insects in medicines and food,” the source quotes the founder of the Biolaboratory, Gennady Ivanov, as saying.

However, Rostovites were not happy with the news that healthy protein from flies could appear in bread.

“Fly bread goes well with fried grasshoppers and quinoa salad,” “That’s it? Now the expression “flies separately, cutlets separately” is not relevant?”, “Finally, I will stop eating flour”, “Maybe we don’t need to overcome this barrier?”, “Well done, you learned. Eat yourself. “Bon appetit,” wrote subscribers to the public page “This is Rostov.”

The black soldier fly used to live only in tropical areas of South America. In recent years it has been introduced to all continents. The easternmost place in Eurasia where this fly was spotted is the Black Sea coast in the Krasnodar region. Its northernmost habitats in Europe are Germany and the Czech Republic. The body of the insect can reach a length of 2 cm. The fly has a black body and white legs. She lives less than 80 days.

Black soldier fly larvae feed on any organic waste: decaying fruits, manure, spoiled fish, etc. They can reach 2.5 cm in length. The larval stage lasts up to 36 days. The larva then turns into a pupa and, after about two weeks, into a fly.
