In Ivanovo, the building of the museum of artist Alexander Morozov is being reroofed. It’s closed for now. The exhibition will open again in early summer. How the identified architectural monument will look after renovation is in the report.

Marina Zenina, correspondent: “A large log house with a tiled roof, unusual for Ivanov, was built in 1910 for engineer Ludwig Auer, who arrived at the Garelin factory. After the revolution, apartments were located here, the house passed from hand to hand, until the museum of the artist Alexander Morozov settled here in 2001.”

The house was built for an Austrian and a nobleman, focusing on his preferences. The building continues not the original Russian, but the European traditions of wooden architecture. This is a rare example of rationalism in provincial residential architecture. The house was given to Morozov’s collection, as the artist bequeathed it on the condition that a separate museum be opened.

Tatyana Guseva, deputy Director of Housekeeping of the Ivanovo Regional Art Museum: “Here are his paintings, here are his household items, here are the books he read, here are the outfits in which he performed. Here are his musical instruments, which he knew how to play, and there are graphics.”

The building has not been renovated for a long time. Only traces of the original tiles remained; the roof was torn off several times and patched in small parts. When it rained, the ceilings leaked and we had to substitute basins. In 2021, an estimate was drawn up. Last year, the museum received federal funding – more than 6 million rubles were allocated for repairs. Before work began, some of the exhibits were removed.

“The main tiled covering has been removed, sheathing has been made on one side, and on the other side the old sheathing is now being removed. It will all be reproduced as it originally looked, only the tiles will be replaced with a composite material identical to the tiles.”

Now builders are treating the beams with a fire-resistant and wood-protective solution. It is also planned to replace the rafter system in the attic. According to the contract, the work must be completed on May 30. The museum staff also dreams of restoring the façade, foundation, and shutters.
