Novosibirsk resident Alexander Matkheev was sentenced to 10 years in prison because he tried to leave for Ukraine to participate in hostilities against the Russian Armed Forces.
It is reported that he wanted to join the organization Legion “Freedom of Russia” (recognized as terrorist and banned in the Russian Federation). It was established that the defendant purchased tactical and military equipment and, following the coordinator’s instructions, bought train tickets to leave the territory of Russia. His actions were stopped by FSB officers: he was detained in the waiting room of the railway station. He also posted posts on the Internet calling for terrorism.
Alexander Matkheev was found guilty under the articles “public calls for terrorist activities, public justification of terrorism or propaganda of terrorism, committed using the media or electronic or information and telecommunication networks, including the Internet”, “preparation for participation in the activities of an organization, which, in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation, is recognized as terrorist” and “preparation for high treason.”
The court sentenced him to imprisonment for a term of 10 years, with the first three years to be served in prison, and the remaining term in a high-security correctional colony, with a fine of 500 thousand rubles, with restriction of freedom for a period of 1 year 6 months, with imprisonment the right to engage in activities related to the placement of materials on public networks, including the Internet, for a period of two years.
