On April 25, 1942, the armored train “Murmanets” left for its first combat voyage. The head of the regional center, Igor Morar, reminded the northerners of this in his telegram channel.

The armored train was built by the staff of the carriage depot of the Murmansk railway station, it was equipped with three naval 100-mm guns, six machine guns and four anti-aircraft machine guns with an optical rangefinder on three armored platforms.

“Murmanets” carried out the defense of the railway lines of the Kirov Railway on the Loukhi – Kem – Belomorsk section, escorted trains with national economic and military cargo and protected them from attacks by enemy aircraft.

– The armored train suppressed firing points, participated in the defense of railway lines and entered into battle with the enemy. This gave the Murmansk hub workers the opportunity to timely reload cargo from arriving ships into wagons and send trains to their destinations, uninterruptedly deliver ammunition, food and fuel to the Northern Navy and the Karelian Front, the city mayor emphasized.

In total, during the Great Patriotic War, the Murmansk carriage depot was equipped with two armored trains and separate armored carriages for anti-aircraft artillery teams. Right there, 80% of the spare parts had to be manufactured on site, and in the locomotive depot they made parts for M-1 mines, F-1 grenades, mortars and other types of weapons.
