Almost 120 Tomsk residents from April 18 to April 24 went to medical institutions with tick bites; Since the beginning of the epidemic season, 145 people have been affected by these arachnids, the press service of the regional department of Rospotrebnadzor reported on Thursday.

It was previously reported that the entire territory of the Tomsk region is endemic for tick-borne viral encephalitis (TBE). In 2023, the first case of tick bites in the region was recorded on March 16 in Tomsk. In 2024, the first tick bites on Tomsk residents were recorded on April 5; in the first week, 10 people were injured by ticks, including two children.

“Based on the results of the past week, from April 18 to April 24, 117 complaints involving ticks were registered, including 36 children. The largest part of the complaints occurred in the city of Tomsk – 78, including 26 children,” the message said.

It is clarified that cases of suction have also been recorded in Asinovsky, Bakcharsky, Zyryansky, Kozhevnikovsky, Krivosheinsky, Molchanovsky, Pervomaisky, Chainsky and Shegarsky districts of the Tomsk region.

According to the press service, in 20 days since the beginning of the epidemic season, 145 people, including 45 children, came to medical institutions in the region with tick bites. Of the victims, only 20 were vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis.

As previously reported, seroprophylaxis centers began operating around the clock in the Tomsk region on April 15. In Tomsk, seroprophylaxis points are located in the interuniversity clinic (Kyiv street, 74), medical unit No. 2 (Bela Kun street, 3) and children’s hospital No. 1 (Moskovsky tract, 4).

It was also previously reported that vaccination is the most effective way to protect against tick-borne infections. Tomsk residents who did not have time to get vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis in the fall can undergo emergency vaccination of two shots in 2024. In total, 114 thousand doses of vaccine were delivered to the region, which is 30% more than in 2023. Also in 2024, it is planned to treat 2,600 hectares of parks, squares and other recreational areas in the region against ticks. The first treatments will begin after the snow melts. It is planned to spend 5.72 million rubles on the work.
