Residents of several islands of Arkhangelsk will receive a recalculation for the service of handling MSW

On the islands of Kegostrov, Khabarka and Brevennik, the relocation operator EcoIntegrator was forced to suspend waste removal due to the lack of temporary accumulation points and the seasonal cessation of navigation.

Currently, the regional operator operates 17 temporary waste accumulation points (TWAP). All of them are located in hard-to-reach areas of the Arkhangelsk region and are approved by the waste management scheme. DTPs are places specially equipped by local administrations where garbage trucks transport waste from container sites for temporary storage. As a rule, the operator “EcoIntegrator” uses PVN in the off-season: from October to December and from the end of March to May. The sites are cleaned in summer and winter, using ferries and snow-and-ice roads to move garbage trucks.

For example, on the islands of Ascension, Lastola and Pustosh in the Primorsky region there are no problems with waste removal. In these territories there is a military force. On the islands of Arkhangelsk – Kegostrov, Khabarka and Brevennik – the situation is the opposite. It was planned to begin work on equipping the PVN last summer, but the municipality does not have the funds for this. As a result, there is nowhere to take out garbage on the islands themselves, and navigation has not yet opened.

“We are looking for ways to work in such conditions. Now the operator has organized waste collection on the other side of the islands. You can throw away bags of garbage in a container that we have installed near the tug’s arrival point. We remove waste from it daily. Also, in order to curb the littering of the islands, we handed over big bags to the management companies – special, thick, large-volume bags. They will remove the garbage that currently lies next to the container sites. Until the resumption of regular waste removal on the islands of Arkhangelsk, there will be no charges,” says Evgeniy Shidlovsky, acting regional operator EcoIntegrator.

The re-operator EcoIntegrator will begin removing waste accumulated on the islands of Kegostrov, Khabarka and Brevennik as soon as the ice drift ends and ferry crossings become available.
