The Ulyanovsk region is on the way to becoming a center of domestic machine tool manufacturing. A big step in this direction, not only for the region, but also for the entire country, was made by DM Technologies, which launched the production of its own machines. In addition, the manufacturer organized a two-day technology symposium to highlight its unique developments. The plans are ambitious: to become one of the leading domestic enterprises in the industry.

Innovative start

More than 150 managers and specialists from the metallurgical and related industries from 20 Russian cities gathered at the Ulyanovsk branch of the Russian company DM Technologies, who were presented with a unique Russian CNC lathe COBALT T2, completely designed and constructed by Ulyanovsk engineers – right down to the software.

Before getting acquainted with the company’s products, guests were invited to refresh themselves and cheer up at a coffee break accompanied by live music. Work communication smoothly flowed into friendship, and by this time many had already acquired business contacts.

Initially, the company supplied imported machines to the domestic market, then at a site in Ulyanovsk in the Volga region it organized the production of machine kits, and in December last year it presented its first brainchild – COBALT T2.

The machine can be in demand in the automotive industry, aviation, medical and food industries, instrument making, agricultural enterprises and the oil and gas industry. This year, the unit passed all tests on processing, technical characteristics, speed and received confirmation of the parameters necessary for mass production. The release will start this fall. In addition to the T2, the COBALT line will include two more models: a lathe with milling and robotic functions for processing complex parts with high precision, as well as a high-speed milling machining center for mass production of instrumentation parts.

Young but experienced

The Ulyanovsk plant is small in size (4000 sq.m.), but practical and quite functional. Includes assembly production, machining and warehouse.

— The enterprise is certified according to international standards. We expect an additional audit at the end of May. This year’s production plan is 120 machine sets, including 34 COBALT series machines and more than 80 SKD machines with foreign components. These are quite impressive numbers compared to competitors. Our main advantage is equipment quality control; we carry out pre-sale preparation. In general, we set ourselves the task of becoming one of the leading machine tool enterprises in Russia. Based on the current situation, we plan to occupy up to 30% of the niche,” said Director of the production branch of DM Technologies Alexey Zhilov.

Despite the fact that the company is young (operating since 2022), it has more than enough experience and competencies. The company brought together employees who previously worked in foreign organizations of a similar profile, in particular in the Japanese concern DMG MORI.

— The company employs about 135 people. All are Ulyanovsk residents. We attract specialists who are quite difficult to find in the region. I would like to note that the design department mainly consists of graduates of local universities. We are solving the problem of employee shortage not only by decent wages, but also by launching a professional training system,” said Alexey Zhilov.

The company is raising the missing personnel itself. A project for training service engineers is being launched, and a system of qualification levels for engineering and technical employees has been developed, which they can climb depending on their skills. The main staff has been formed, but for some positions recruitment is ongoing: mechanics, programmers, electronics engineers.

The new enterprise will contribute to the revival of the machine tool industry in the region. Against the backdrop of prolonged sanctions pressure, the company’s developments are more relevant than ever for the domestic market.

Rustam Alyautdinov says the same thing: “Of course, there is a desire to enter the international market, but now the demand is high in Russia. Aimed at domestic customers. Geography of projects for today: from Kaliningrad to Krasnoyarsk. We supply machines to Kazakhstan and Belarus. We plan to export to other countries from 2026. We must enter mass production with a high level of localization in order to make the price offer more interesting for the international market.”

The symposium is another opportunity to see the work of the plant, learn about new products and trends in metalworking, machine tool building, service maintenance, production monitoring systems, equipment and much more. After a tour of the enterprise, the company’s specialists and partners made presentations on topical issues: solutions for automation in work, financing supplies, training personnel on machine tools, etc.

In particular, the head of the regional competence center Igor Bychkov told the guests about the Labor Productivity national project, which is supervised at the highest government level. To date, it includes all 85 constituent entities of the Russian Federation. Its goal is an annual increase of 5% in labor productivity in large and medium-sized enterprises. Bychkov shared with the present representatives of factories from Tatarstan, Nizhny Novgorod, St. Petersburg and others how to become a participant in the national project and how it will help companies:

– What is its specificity? You’ve probably all heard about lean manufacturing tools. I’ll say right away that the ratings are different: from very good to negative. They didn’t work for some. And why? The reason is a non-systematic approach. This is not a magic pill, but painstaking and long work. Unfortunately, not everyone can do it right away. The same Toyota with 80 years of experience still finds some losses and problems, but nevertheless does not stop.
