The XXI International Film Festival of Marine and Adventure Films “The Sea is Calling!” has ended in St. Petersburg. This year, 25 films from 5 countries were selected for the competition program among numerous applications: Russia, Australia, USA, France, Italy.

The film “Ilya Repin in Samara Luka” by Samara documentary director, member of the Council of the Samara Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, Victoria Garmashova, was awarded by the competent jury of the festival and won in the “Native Shores” category. The film, an adaptation of Ilya Repin’s autobiographical book “Distant Close,” tells about the Russian artist’s journey along the Volga in search of typical images of barge haulers in the summer of 1870. Viewers will learn about the hard work of barge haulers and who exactly was the prototype of the central figure in the painting “Barge Haulers on the Volga.” The film also recreates the history of the creation of the Ilya Repin House Museum in the Volga village of Shiryaevo, Samara Region.

An award plaque and a special prize made of colored glass – “Seahorse” were awarded to Victoria Garmashova at the closing ceremony of the film festival at the House of Cinema (Film Center of the St. Petersburg Organization of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia).

Film screenings and creative meetings of participants took place in the House of Cinema, in the Patriot Park, in the Kronstadt Fortress, the icebreaker museum “Krasin”, the Palace of Culture named after. Kirov. The films were also shown in schools and universities in St. Petersburg and will be shown in the future as part of other events of the “The Sea is Calling!” film festival. after the end of the Echo Festival.

The main goals of the film festival are: promoting the growth of public attention to maritime issues, issues of history, culture, ecology and environmental protection, as well as the implementation of the Presidential program for the patriotic education of youth.
