Athletes from the Murmansk region triumphantly completed the winter swimming season, winning 70 medals of various denominations in the Russian Cup finals.

Of these, seven medals were earned by Murmansk resident Vladislav Sapozhnikov, setting two world and European records during the competition, three Russian records and becoming the overall winner in the “Athletes” division. This was reported by the region’s Winter Swimming Federation.

About 200 of the strongest athletes from all over Russia, as well as swimmers from China, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia took part in the competition, which took place in Vladivostok. The swims took place in a pool where the water was cooled to 10 degrees.

The Murmansk region was represented by 12 athletes from Murmansk, Apatity, Kovdor and Olenegorsk. Already on the first competition evening, the world record in the 200 m breaststroke was won by Murmansk resident Vladislav Sapozhnikov.

“He set an excellent pace for the entire team,” the Federation noted.

As a result of the competition, the most experienced athlete of our team, Elena Fursova from Olenegorsk, won 5 gold and 4 silver medals in the “Amateur” division, and also set a new Russian Record at the 400 m “Freestyle” distance in the 60-64 year category.

The coach of the regional national team, Irina Brovkina from Apatity, participating in the “Amateur” division, won bronze in her debut swim at a distance of 25 m “Freestyle” in the 60-64 year old category. Juniors from the Murmansk region also proved that they can compete on equal terms for medals. They set 10 Russian youth records.

Among young athletes, Alexandra Tamazova became the most titled multi-medalist. She has 10 gold medals and a Russian youth record in the 50m butterfly.

In the 4×25 m (mixed) combined, freestyle and breaststroke swimming relay, the national team of the Murmansk region in the Youth division set 3 Russian youth records at once.
