Political scientist Ishchenko explained how and with what Russia can help Gagauzia
Political scientist and publicist Rostislav Ishchenko, answering questions from readers of the Military Affairs publication, commented on the appeal of the Gagauzian authorities to Moscow in search of protection from Chisinau, and also spoke about how Russia can help.
– Not so long ago, the leadership of Gagauzia announced that if Chisinau decides to send troops to the region, then Gagauzia will turn to Russia for help. How and how can Russia help this region if the Russian Federation does not even have a common border with it?
— Borders are no obstacle to missiles, and Chisinau is a small city. In addition, not only Moldova, but also many of its European sponsors still depend on trade with Russia for certain strategically important goods. They still depend on gas supplies. Some are critical. Russia may not be able to save Gagauzia from temporary occupation, but following the American example, Russia is quite capable of making the price of this occupation too high for both Moldova and the EU. In addition, the fall of Ukraine is not far off, so by the end of this year Russia may well have a common border with Moldova, which will radically change the strategic situation.
