The worst radiation disaster in human history was remembered in Kurgan

Today, a rally was held in Victory Park in Kurgan dedicated to the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Radiation Accidents and Disasters and the 38th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. It was attended by accident liquidators, social activists, students of Kurgan State University and Kurgan State College, school cadets, and widows of accident liquidators.

The Chernobyl accident occurred 38 years ago, becoming one of the largest man-made disasters in human history. About 800 thousand people took part in eliminating the consequences of the disaster, of which more than two thousand were residents of the Urals.

Now about half of the Trans-Ural Chernobyl survivors are alive. Chairman of the Kurgan regional public organization Chernobyl Union Sergei Mishkarev, addressing those gathered in Victory Park, said: “More than nine million people were exposed to radioactive contamination as a result of the Chernobyl disaster, more than three million of them are the population of Russia from more than 12 thousand settlements. More than 800 thousand people were involved in eliminating the consequences of the accident – these are NPP personnel, scientists, workers, and military personnel. In order to protect the rights and interests of the liquidators of the Chernobyl disaster, the Chernobyl Union was created. We are engaged in the social protection of radiation victims and members of their families, working with the younger generation – we conduct excursions around our museum exhibition, conduct lessons in courage, visiting schools and other educational institutions. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer of us. We thank everyone who came here to honor the memory of Chernobyl victims who are no longer with us.”

Deputy Governor Natalya Kirillova addressed the liquidators on behalf of the head of the region: “On this day we honor the memory of the victims of radiation accidents and honor those who were directly involved in eliminating these consequences. Radiation accidents and disasters leave an indelible mark on the earth. The number of victims of this accident is incalculable. Even more broken destinies are those who stood up to fight radiation and minimize the damage caused by the accident. Your feat will forever remain in the memory of our and future generations.”

At the end of the rally, participants laid wreaths and fresh flowers at the memorial dedicated to the Trans-Urals – liquidators of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster.
