By the end of 2024, a permafrost monitoring point will appear in Buryatia. Scientists from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute plan to launch it among 57 wells in the Far East, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources reported.

Points of the state system of background monitoring of the state of permafrost allow for a comprehensive study of permafrost zones.

– Analysis of data on changes in ground temperature will make it possible to obtain a complete understanding of how and at what speed the relief of territories in the permafrost zone will change, will make it possible to take the necessary measures in a timely manner and qualitatively prepare the regional economy, infrastructure and industrial facilities for new climatic realities, – scientists shared.

Recently, the southernmost point was launched on the border of Mongolia and Altai. The well is located at an altitude of 2.1 thousand meters above sea level on the southern section of the Chuysky tract. The object is located at the same distance from the Arctic, Pacific and Indian oceans, in an area with a sharply continental climate. The temperature of ice-saturated frozen soils in this area is about 0 degrees.

Last year, scientists launched 20 points. The northernmost of them is located on Hayes Island in the Franz Josef Land archipelago. The data is sent to the permafrost monitoring center of the AARI.

In the future, the monitoring system will cover the entire territory of its distribution – this is 65% of the country’s area. In three years they plan to equip 140 points.
