The head of the laboratory of the asphalt concrete plant in Murmansk, Alla Kustovaya, told Nord-News why the asphalt on the roads sometimes disappears along with the snow after winter.

– Problems on the road begin with design. Initially, the load is calculated incorrectly. Now we have several projects under re-coordination, because we are sure that the asphalt concrete specified in the technical specifications simply will not withstand the load that is expected,” the specialist explained.

Alla Kustovaya noted that the plant produces 20 types of asphalt concrete mixtures and works according to new GOST standards.

– We have the opportunity to partially test the wheels in the laboratory, at least with a load. And we already know: if the asphalt does not meet the GOST standards for ruts, then it will continue to suffer from its formation,” said the head of the laboratory.

The asphalt is also checked after laying it on the road surface. This is necessary, among other things, to understand who is responsible for the fragility of the road.

– Nobody canceled the warranty obligations. The plant produced the mixture, the laboratory tested it. Next comes installation. It has its own technology. Whether it was violated or not is the question. To check how the asphalt was laid, the laboratory goes to the site and takes a sample – a core. And from the analysis it becomes clear whether the technology was violated or not,” said the head of the asphalt concrete plant, Alexander Klimenko.

The warranty period is 4 years, during which time the culprit, be it a contractor or a supplier, must correct defects at his own expense.

As previously reported, the asphalt concrete plant in Murmansk will begin work in early May; production is now being prepared for the season of active road work. A trial run took place at the enterprise. The hot asphalt was sent to a laboratory for testing.
