The governor of the Vladimir region outlined the prospects for Semyazino airport: they plan to enlarge the runway and move it away from residential buildings in order to accommodate cargo and passenger flights. First of all, the governor talks about the goals of the Ministry of Defense, and only secondarily about possible civilian flights

The largest tranche of additional regional budget revenues will go towards the start of reconstruction of the runway at Semyazino Airport in the city of Vladimir. The airfield will be updated first for the purposes of the Ministry of Defense and in the future for civil aviation, the governor said.

According to Alexander Avdeev, on April 22, a decree of the Russian government was signed on the temporary transfer of ownership of the Vladimir region for the period of reconstruction of the artificial runway of the Semyazino airport in Vladimir:

“This important step is the result of a year of painstaking work on the transfer of property, primarily with the Ministry of Defense and the federal Ministry of Transport, and the formation of a pre-design solution.”

It is expected that in two to three years, that is, in 2024-2026, the runway, which has fallen into disrepair, will be restored. Its length will increase from 1,950 to 2,350 meters, and it will also be shifted 400 meters from the houses. Avdeev says what needs to be done so that the airport can receive and dispatch passenger and cargo flights.

Alexander Avdeev said that the reconstruction of Semyazino will cost about 5 billion rubles. In order not to delay the process, the Vladimir White House has already received approval from the Legislative Assembly to allocate the first tranche for these works – in order to go to auction after the May holidays.

Apparently, the updated Semyazin airport is now primarily needed by the military. But the Vladimir authorities also promise not to forget about civilians in the future.

“From Semyazino you can fly to most airports in the country. And we’ll decide where we’ll point our wings when we bring the site up to standard,” the next governor dreams of flying from the capital of the Vladimir region.

Let us recall that air travel from the Vladimir region was resumed under Governor Svetlana Orlova on August 4, 2017: passengers were offered to fly on 50-seat Embraer jets to St. Petersburg for 4,674 rubles one way. The liner covered the distance between Vladimir and St. Petersburg in 1 hour and 20 minutes. But already on September 18, the carrier Komiaviatrans expressed concern about the low passenger traffic on flights on the Vladimir – St. Petersburg route.

From January 1, 2018, air flights from Vladimir to St. Petersburg ceased: the Komiaviatrans company did not receive a federal subsidy to compensate for cheap flights. Komiaviatrans stated that passenger traffic from Vladimir to St. Petersburg was small, and accordingly, the flights did not pay for themselves even taking into account federal subsidies. At the same time, regional authorities insisted that this phenomenon was temporary, and the carrier would be given federal compensation, which would allow the resumption of flights from Vladimir to the Northern capital.

Once again, Semyazino airport appeared in the local news in the winter of 2023: Governor Avdeev expressed to the head of the Federal Air Transport Agency, Alexander Neradko, the idea of the need to reconstruct the airfield, which operates in a limited mode, and, accordingly, lengthen the runway.

In the spring of 2023, representatives of the Ministry of Defense began urging owners of plots in the vegetable garden non-profit partnership Polet near the Semyazino airfield to urgently liquidate their plots. The reasons given were the planned reconstruction of the Semyazino airfield and the introduction of a high-alert regime in October 2022, which requires increased security of important facilities. By the end of summer, the Polet gardening partnership was a sad sight with numerous landfills, broken sheds and beds overgrown with weeds, but no one came to level the gardens with a bulldozer.

And on March 15 of this year, the head of the city of Vladimir, Dmitry Naumov, signed a resolution on the preparation of a project for planning the territory in the area of the Semyazino airport. We are talking about a territory of about 422 hectares, limited from the east by the road to the airport and gardens in the Nizhny Selts area, from the south by the Moskovskoye Highway, from the west by forest lands in the area of the Yuryevets and Nemtsovo microdistricts, from the north by gardens in the Upper Selts area and Sodyshka River.
