Due to melting glaciers, part of Russian territory may be under water

The International Panel on Climate Change has suggested that water levels may not rise above 1.1 meters by 2100. However, according to the latest calculations by scientists, if the air temperature on the planet increases by an average of 2 degrees, then within 80 years the level of the World Ocean will rise by about half a meter. And by 2300, the coastline will rise by two meters, writes the Russian Seven.

This will entail the need to resettle coastal areas, where a significant part of the planet’s inhabitants live. Using the Floodmap.net service, a scenario was compiled for Russia. In the worst case scenario, the water will rise by 5 meters. According to the forecast, Azov, the south of Rostov-on-Don, part of Kerch and Adler will go to the bottom. The waters of the Gulf of Finland will flood the coastal areas of St. Petersburg, part of Kronstadt and Sestroretsk. Naryan-Mar, Salekhard, Nakhodka will be unlucky. But there is time to solve these problems with the help of dams and similar structures. Technologies do not stand still.

Scientists have also looked into the very distant future. They suggested that if all the polar ice melts, the waters of the Arctic Ocean will flow onto the Russian and West Siberian plains, and the only “island” will remain the Ural ridge.

Satellite images show that glaciers at the planet’s North and South Poles are shrinking in size, but it is difficult to predict how much they will melt before the end of the century. Climate scientists are calling for slower reductions in carbon dioxide emissions to reduce the greenhouse effect. But scientists attribute warming to natural climate fluctuations. In this case, taking steps to reduce emissions may be a waste of money.

We previously reported that scientists have discovered giant “spiders” on Mars.
