On the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Radiation Accidents and Disasters, which is celebrated around the world on April 26, Ivanovo residents came to the memorial stele in the park near ISUTU to pay tribute to all those who died selflessly defending the earth from nuclear danger. This was reported by the press service of the mayor’s office.

The rally brought together liquidators of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, participants in nuclear tests at the Semipalatinsk test site, veterans of special risk units, as well as representatives of regional and city authorities, youth and public organizations. “Traditionally, the memorial ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Ivanovo City Council, Alexander Kuzmichev, and the head of the city department of social protection, Lyubov Semenova,” the press service writes.

The rally participants shared their memories and laid flowers at the obelisk to the participants in the liquidation of the Chernobyl accident. The memory of those who gave their lives and health to save people was honored with a minute of silence.

The man-made disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant occurred on April 26, 1986. Among the participants in the liquidation of its consequences were more than 2,350 Ivanovo residents. Almost all of them were seriously exposed to radiation. Currently, 315 Chernobyl victims and 18 people injured in other man-made disasters, including at the Mayak production association and at the Semipalatinsk test site, live in Ivanovo.

Citizens exposed to radiation as a result of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant receive social support measures from the federal budget in terms of monthly cash payments, payment for housing and utilities, and a set of social services. Currently, these measures are provided to 268 citizens.

In Ivanovo, participants in the liquidation of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant are also provided with preferential travel on public transport, free trips to a sanatorium and treatment at the hospital for war invalids.

In addition, every year on the Day of Remembrance of those killed in radiation accidents and disasters, the Ivanovo Department of Social Protection of the Population presents gifts to participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident who have a disability group, as well as to mothers and widows of the deceased (deceased) Chernobyl victims. In 2024, gifts will be received by 38 disabled Chernobyl victims, 100 widows and mothers of deceased liquidators of the consequences of the accident.
