St. Petersburg residents carry out quite a lot of large-scale projects, making their contribution to ensuring the sustainable development of the Far North and the technological independence of Russia. This is evidenced by the growing trade turnover of the city on the Neva with the Arctic regions. As a reminder, at the end of last year, it reached 11.3 billion rubles, which is 28.5% more than in 2022.

But it is not enough to maintain this high pace of mutual work. It is important to reach new levels of cooperation by participating in the implementation of ongoing megaprojects, helping northerners solve personnel problems and improve the standard of living in the Far North. The scientific and industrial potential of St. Petersburg makes it possible to do this, it was said at a meeting organized by the specialized committee of Smolny…

Not long before this, it is worth adding, two conferences related to Arctic topics were held in St. Petersburg. One of them, a student one, took place at the college at Makarovka (GUMRF). Its cadets presented reports on the history of the development of the Arctic, the expeditions of Russian explorers and the traditions of the indigenous peoples of the North, as well as the peculiarities of the development of this huge region at the present stage.

And at Herzen University (Russian State Pedagogical University named after A.I. Herzen) an interregional conference “Taste of the Arctic” was held. Its participants were employees of the Institute of the Peoples of the North, part of this pedagogical university, and two academic centers – the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography named after Peter the Great and the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology named after N. N. Miklouho-Maclay. Representatives of the Chukotka branch of the North-Eastern Federal University and the Magadan Regional Museum of Local Lore also took part in the conference.

Experts discussed the features of the national cuisine of the northerners in the context of ensuring food security in these regions, isolated from the mainland. And the implementation of the state program for northern delivery of food, medicine and other vital cargo there by sea.

The material was published in the newspaper “St. Petersburg Vedomosti” No. 77 (7653) dated April 26, 2024 under the title “Taste of the Arctic.”
