Ilaria Salis, an Antifa activist detained in Hungary and nominated by the Italian far left as a candidate for the European Parliament elections, on Thursday, April 25, on the occasion of Italy’s national holiday marking the end of World War II, welcomed the guerrilla struggle against “Nazi fascism” “

Ilaria Salis’ letter was read by her father during the National Union of Italian Partisans (Anpi) march in Rome. Participants in the memorial procession repeatedly chanted “Ilaria, she will be free!”

The letter, written in prison in Hungary, was also sent by Ilaria Salis to the Italian press.

“In my country, when we remember the end of the Second World War, we remember the expulsion of the Nazi fascists thanks to the courageous struggle of men and women partisans. From my gray cell, I wish with all my heart that my country would be worthy of its own history. Today, as you have done in the past, face the injustices of the world by standing on the side of truth in history. Happy April 25!” Salis said in the letter.

In Italy, April 25 is considered a significant holiday of the next anniversary of the country’s liberation from fascism during the Second World War.

Ilaria Salis was detained by Hungarian authorities in February last year. This year, a trial began in Hungary of a forty-year-old activist of the Antifa movement, accused, in particular, of participating in hooligan attacks on passersby in Budapest, mistaken by activists for “Nazi-fascists” in appearance. The victims received quite severe injuries.

On April 18, the Alliance of the Green Party and the Italian Left (AVS) announced that it will nominate Ilaria Salis as the leader of the list in the elections to the European Parliament in one of the territorial constituencies in Italy.

Regarding the nomination, Roberto Salis, Ilaria’s father, said on Thursday, April 25, that they are still discussing the terms of the nomination, since “Ilaria’s situation is different from all other candidates.”

“Ilaria today is the embodiment of anti-fascism,” – said her father.

The Italian publication Corriere della Sera cited statements by the former Hungarian ambassador to Rome, a member of the European Parliament from the ruling Fidesz party Eniko Gyoriaccording to which Ilaria Salis will not be the first member of the European Parliament to be “accused of a crime.”

Eniko Gyori believes that the Italian left used the court case as a tool for their political goals, primarily to attack the prime minister Georgia Meloni.

“In our country, politics and justice are separated, and I see that the Italian government also supports this,” – she said.
