Epic Games has released Unreal Engine 5.4, the latest version of its flagship game engine, promising significant improvements in performance and graphics.

Unveiled at the recent State of Unreal GDC 2024 event, version 5.4 is now available to developers and promises major changes.

The main thing is the performance improvement, which is expected to provide smooth 60fps playback on modern hardware. Epic Games is highlighting significant improvements to shader compilation, which should eliminate the annoying clipping that has appeared in some UE games in recent years.

New features in Unreal Engine 5.4 include “Adaptive Tessellation” for Nanite, which allows you to achieve incredible terrain detail without overloading your processing power.

“Heterogenous Volumes” is another new feature that allows you to create realistic and dynamic smoke and clouds. In addition, the internal “Temporal Super Resolution” upscaling tool has been improved, and developers have more options to easily integrate their own AI and machine learning tools into UE5.

Other new features include “Motion Matching”, which is available to all developers. This tool has previously been used in Fortnite since the release of Chapter 5. Epic Games will also provide a free training package containing over 500 AAA motion capture animations created from high-quality data.

All changes in EU 5.4 can be found here.
