How does turning off a smartphone differ from rebooting, and what does it affect?

--

Increasing the stability of modern smartphones and the systematic eradication of bugs and software failures has gradually led to the fact that we almost stopped rebooting them, not to mention completely shutting them down. If, say, 10 years ago this procedure “refreshed” the device, resetting running processes and thereby increasing the speed of the operating system, today this is not given such importance. At best ours smartphones reboot at the time of installing the update, but nothing more. We stopped turning them off just like that, believing that a reboot would do the same thing. But no.

Which is better: reboot or shutdown

Probably everyone understands, plus or minus, What is the difference between rebooting and turning off your smartphone? from the point of view of performance technique. A reboot is essentially a software process that involves resetting current processes and subsequent “clean” restart. Typically, a reboot is used to OS cleanup, be it Android or iOS, or applying changes at the system level. During a reboot, the smartphone – and any other device in general – does not lose power, but continues to function.

Shutdown – This is a one-way procedure. It is of a hardware nature and involves a complete stop of the power supply. Therefore, the reset that occurs as a result of turning off the device is dictated not by the operation of software mechanisms as during a reboot, but by a physical lack of energy. But, it would seem, what difference does it make to us, as users: is the reset done by software or hardware? In fact, none. But differences between overload and shutdown After all, it exists not only at the procedural level.

Why do you need to restart your smartphone?

First of all, reboot and shutdown have different purposes, which can be indirectly understood from their procedural features. A reboot is needed to carry out so-called stabilizing measures:

  • Recovering a smartphone from a frozen state
  • Installing system updates (no reboot required to update applications)
  • Stop and restart all processes
  • Resetting RAM
  • Resetting the processor cache

Particularly interesting in this regard is the so-called CPU cache. Many argue that it is not reset upon reboot, but only when the device is completely turned off, but information from open sources refutes this thesis. The processor cache, like any other type of cache, being dynamic memory, is lost when the device is rebooted.

What is processor cache and why reset it

Кэш процессора — это небольшое количество очень быстрой памяти, расположенное непосредственно на чипе процессора. Эта память используется для хранения копий часто используемых данных и команд с целью ускорения доступа к этим данным и уменьшения времени обработки.

Resetting the processor cache helps:

  • Eliminate errors and crashes: Because old or corrupt information that could cause problems in the processor is removed.
  • Improve performance: Clearing the cache forces the processor to load the latest data from main memory, which can help prevent programs from behaving incorrectly.

Technically, a reboot can be called a system procedure aimed at maintaining the correct and error-free operation of the device. In the end, updates, and cleaning of clogged RAM, and getting your smartphone out of a freeze – all these are some kind of elements of ensuring stability. During a reboot, the device does not turn off, but continues to be powered by the battery.

Should I turn off my smartphone?

A shutdown, unlike a reboot, is intended to completely stop all processes in smartphone operation over a long period of time, including energy consumption. While the device continues to function in sleep mode, this does not happen when it is turned off. Technically, a shutdown can perform the same function as a reboot, but is a redundant procedure. There is no need to deprive your smartphone of power to unload running applications from RAM.

Disabling only makes sense when you want to completely stop all processes occurring at the system level and prevent them from restarting, as happens with a reboot. Thus, we can safely say that turning off the device is a last resort method that may only be useful in a limited number of scenarios. For example, when you need remove the device for long-term storage or there is a need to save battery life. For everything else there is – no, not MasterCard – but a reboot.
