According to a recent survey, young Japanese people are not interested in platforms like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, preferring to play on portable devices like the Nintendo DS.

The survey, conducted in late 2023, of about 700 young Japanese aged 15 to 24, named Nintendo Switch and PC as the main platforms for video games, but both are significantly behind mobile in popularity.

Among 700 young Japanese, 80% play video games, and nearly 95% said they play on mobile devices. Nintendo Switch was named by more than 38% of respondents as the platform they like to play on, and PC by more than 33%. In fourth place are tablets with 26%, and in fifth place are Nintendo DS with 12%.

This means that the PS5 and Xbox Series are ranked below the Nintendo DS, suggesting that they have little to no value among young people. Even those gamers who consider themselves hardcore have chosen Switch, mobile devices and PC as their main platform.

The price of current-generation consoles was an important factor, as the majority of young people surveyed say they spend less than $70 a year on video games, focusing on free-to-play games.
