The Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has contacted the Serbian Embassy in Ljubljana to protest the recent offensive statements made by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić towards Slovenia following the UN Security Council meeting on Kosovo, Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said on Wednesday, April 24.

On Tuesday, April 23, President Vučić told Serbian journalists that Serbia was “trapped” by the United States, Switzerland and Slovenia in the UN Security Council.

“We don’t know who is more disgusting, Slovenia or the others,” – he said.

The President of Serbia expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that the “president” of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani took several Kosovar Albanian women raped during the Kosovo War to a meeting in New York on Monday, April 22, to testify about Serbian war crimes.

According to Vučić, Osmani claimed that the women were employees of her office, and after it was revealed that this was not the case, they would not have been allowed to attend the meeting in accordance with UN protocol. However, “one of the superpowers intervened” to finally get them there, the Serbian head of state added, speaking of a “trap” against Serbia.

At the meeting, Osmani called on the Serbian president to apologize to the victims of the former Serbian regime, which she said Vucic was part of.

There was also a stir in Serbia over Slovenia’s involvement in preparing a draft that was presented to the UN last week calling for the establishment of an “international day of remembrance for the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia.”

The Slovenian Foreign Minister called Vucic’s statements insulting, unacceptable and false.

“We demand an explanation and an apology. This is not in the spirit of good neighborliness or friendship,” Fion said, adding that she could not imagine working with someone who used such words and insulted an entire nation. “We expect Serbia to act in the spirit of the European values that it represents,” – she added.

The Serbian Embassy in Ljubljana is headed by a temporary administrator. According to media reports, Slovenia has not yet approved the candidacy Zoran Djordjevic to serve as Serbia’s ambassador to Ljubljana due to concerns in security and intelligence circles about his identity. Zoran Djordjevic served as Serbian Defense Minister in Vučić’s second cabinet (2016−2017).
