India, one of the largest arms importers, plans to stop large purchases of defense equipment from Russia due to its desire to reorient itself to US cooperation. Nandan Unnikrishnan, an expert at the New Delhi think tank, reported this to Politico.

“India does not want to cross any red lines that the West, especially the US, may have,” the expert told Politico. According to the author of the material, the reason for the refusal to supply from Russia could be possible sanctions, a special operation in Ukraine and the desire to develop its own defense industry.

The ex-adviser to the Indian Ministry of Defense believes that the reason for the reduction in purchases was Moscow’s inability to meet the demands made by the importer. The newspaper’s insiders noted that arms purchases from Russia will continue, but major deals by the importer are not being considered in the future.

Research by the Stockholm International Institute has shown that Russian arms exports to India have been declining since 2009. Since 2019, the volume of supplies from Russia has amounted to 36% of the total number of imported weapons in the republic.
