Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will not travel to the United States on May 9. Reuters reported this on April 26. According to the agency, Erdogan was supposed to meet with United States President Joe Biden, but postponed the visit.

As Reuters clarifies, the trip was canceled due to changes in the Turkish leader’s schedule. The meeting between the presidents of Turkey and the United States was to be the first since 2019. At the same time, the agency notes that Erdogan’s visit to the United States has not been officially announced.

“Relations between the US and Turkey have long been strained by differences[…]Although they have thawed since Ankara ratified Sweden’s bid to join NATO earlier this year, tensions over Syria and Russia have and the war in Gaza continues,” writes Reuters.

Let us remember that back in the winter it was reported that a meeting between Erdogan and Vladimir Putin was being prepared. However, at the end of February, the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, said that Putin would definitely not go to Turkey before the elections (March 15–17, 2024).

On April 17, Peskov said that the schedules of the presidents of Russia and Turkey could not yet be coordinated. This makes it difficult to name the exact date of the Russian leader’s official visit to Ankara.
