New generation Opel Grandland crossover presented – Autoreview

--

Seven years ago SUV Opel Grandland (then still with the X prefix) became the first model of this German brand built on the EMP2 modular platform of the PSA concern. This Opel became the closest relative of the Peugeot 3008 SUV, and subsequently acquired many more co-platforms within the expanded Stellantis concern. Last fall, “three thousand eight” moved into New Generationand now his German brother followed him.

As with the previous generation, the Opel Grandland has a more discreet appearance than the Peugeot. This is supported by the Opel Vizor-style front end design and the classic station wagon profile, while the Peugeot 3008 now has a coupe-like silhouette. Other distinctive features of the Grandland include fins on the C-pillars, a black “floating” roof and illuminated logos on the bow and stern.

With the change of generation, the Opel Grandland has grown noticeably: the length has increased by 173 mm (now 4650 mm), the width has increased by 64 mm (to 1905 mm), and the height has increased by 19 mm (to 1660 mm). The wheelbase is also stretched by 109 mm, to 2784 mm, although the distance between the rows of seats has increased by only 20 mm. The trunk volume has been increased from 514 to 550 liters, but with the rear row folded down the compartment has shrunk a little: now 1641 liters instead of 1652 in the previous model.

The interior itself is completely redone, in its center there is a 16-inch widescreen media system screen, and in front of the driver there are virtual instruments and a head-up display. The transmission selector remains on the central tunnel, but now it is miniature, and this frees up space for cup holders and compartments for small items. The front seats have a proven orthopedic shape and can have ventilation, massage and numerous electrical adjustments. The back row of the back row is divided into three parts in the proportion 40:20:40.

Like the new Peugeot 3008, the “second” Opel Grandland is built on the STLA Medium modular platform of the Stellantis concern, which is a further evolution of the “EMP2 trolley”. This means the possibility of creating both versions with internal combustion engines and electric modifications, which Grandland has not had before. In its electric vehicle form, the crossover offers a choice between two options for a 400-volt traction battery – with a capacity of 73 or 98 kWh. In the first case, the electric motor on the front axle produces 210 hp, in the second case – 230 hp, and the range is approximately 500 and 700 km (according to the WLTP cycle), respectively. DC charging power is up to 160 kW. A dual-engine all-wheel drive version will appear later.

There are also two hybrid versions with gasoline turbo engines, and they have only front-wheel drive. The younger hybrid has a 1.2 turbo engine, a six-speed robot with two clutches and a built-in 48-volt electric motor with a power of 28 hp. Peak system power is 136 hp.

The second hybrid is already rechargeable; its battery is designed for 21 kWh, and this charge should be enough for 85 km of driving in electric mode. The 1.6 petrol turbo-four works in tandem with a seven-speed preselective “robot” and an electric motor, with a total power of 195 hp.

Opel is proud that, despite using a unified platform, the new Grandland was designed and “drawn” in Rüsselsheim, and its production will be launched at the same plant in Eisenach, Germany, where the previous model was produced. This facility has recently been extensively upgraded to be capable of producing electric vehicles, with an investment of 130 million euros. The Opel Grandland will appear on the European market in the summer. Prices have not yet been announced, but the outgoing crossover now costs from 32,600 euros in Germany.
